Make a plan
Before you do anything, you need to make a detailed plan. This plan should contain everything that needs to be done, when it will be done, and who will do it. By doing this, you will make sure that everything gets done on time with nothing forgotten. It will also help ensure an effective division of labour. With packing in particular, there is an order that you should pack things in. What that particular order is and its benefits will be discussed later in this guide. One thing that is important to note about your plan is that sorting needs to be done before packing. It is significantly harder to sort your belongings after they have already been packed.

Sorting
As stated, before packing you must first sort your belongings. When doing this, it is important to be thorough so that nothing is missed. You will want to sort all of your belongings into 3 main categories: keep; sell or donate; and throw away. You can also have an optional fourth category for anything you are unsure of. The point of sorting like this is to reduce the total volume of your belongings. This will make the whole moving process easier for everyone involved and may also save you money when hiring a moving company. It also has the additional benefit of having everything organised as soon as you move into the new home. After sorting your belongings, be sure to put back neatly anything that is being kept. This will make packing far easier later on.
Packing
Packing is, arguably, the biggest job of any home move. If not thought out properly, the whole process can take a long time with a lot of unnecessary work. As mentioned, there is a proper order that you will need to follow when packing your belongings. Everything should be packed in order of how often it is used. This means that anything that is used daily should be packed last; With things that are rarely used being packed last. The exception to this is anything that is used in an emergency; This should also be packed at the end. The point of packing in this order is to ensure that you have easy access to anything you need without having to go through boxes. On that note, you should also pack a personal bag for each member of the household.
These bags should contain anything that you need to have access to on the day of the move, such as a change of clothes, toiletries, medication, money, and anything else you may need.
